The Legend of Tanabata

Tanabata, celebrated on July 7th each year, is a traditional Japanese festival.
On this day, it is said that Orihime and Hikoboshi are allowed to meet across
the Milky Way.

This legend originated in China and developed uniquely in Japan.

Long ago, Orihime, the daughter of the Sky God, was a skilled weaver.
She wove beautiful fabrics every day.

Hikoboshi, on the other hand, was a diligent cowherd.

The two met, fell in love, and got married. However, after their marriage,
they neglected their work.

Angered by this, the Sky God separated them by the Milky Way, allowing them
to meet only once a year on July 7th, the day of Tanabata.

On this day, Orihime and Hikoboshi cross the Milky Way to reunite.
However, if the weather is bad, the river’s water level rises, and they cannot meet.

Therefore, when it rains on Tanabata, it is called “sairui” (tears of the stars),
believed to be the tears of Orihime and Hikoboshi.

During Tanabata, people write their wishes on strips of paper and hang them
on bamboo branches.

This custom is believed to help improve skills, just like Orihime’s weaving.
By decorating the bamboo leaves, it is believed that Orihime and Hikoboshi’s
power will grant the wishes.

そのため、七夕の日に雨が降ると「催涙雨（さいるいう）」と呼ばれ、織姫と
彦星が流す涙だと言われています。

七夕には、短冊に願い事を書いて笹に飾る風習があります。これは、織姫のように
技術が上達するようにとの願いを込めたものです。また、笹の葉に飾ることで、
織姫と彦星の力で願いが叶うと信じられています。
